Aspen Cracks Down on Chain Stores
In an effort to preserve Aspen’s unique character, City Council unanimously adopted an ordinance that will make it more difficult in the future for chain retailers to set up shop in the downtown and historic Main Street commercial districts. The campaign that influenced this recent development was proposed and promoted last fall by local citizens and independent business owners. They believe that independent businesses provide better wages and better customer service. Other supporters of the ordinance hope to regain economic diversity in Aspen.
